Snap-On Gaskets

Gasket over-compression because of pipe misalignments is one of the most common problems we see daily. The flanges are not parallel and therefore we squeeze the gaskets until it stops leaking. The result is a destroyed gasket. The above illustration shows how the red plastic ring prevents over-compression of the elastomer. Even if we give it the extra torque above the recommended levels, the gasket is fully protected.

Our screen gaskets are not used the same way as conventional filters, although they can be considered a filter.  Conventional filters are built differently and have many layers to prevent particles to pass through, these can reach efficiencies of almost 100%. A particle comes in many different shapes.

For example, a hair has a diameter of Ø 0,1 mm but the length can be centimetres long. If the hair arrives perpendicular to the screen it might pass a 100 mesh screen. With a conventional filter, the second or third layer will prevent the hair to pass. Retention’s of standard screens are calculated according to international standards using perfectly round glass spheres. Our screens are only one layer and therefore they cannot be considered the same as a filter. Each screen gasket has a high-performance gasket made out of one of the validated compounds that we use for our standard Sanitary Gaskets range.

The Solution

The Snap-On™ gasket has this plastic ring on the outside that is just a little thinner than the actual elastomer gasket itself. Place the gasket over one ferrule by snapping it on. Place the other ferrule on top of the gasket and put a clamp around the fittings. When you turn the wing-nut you will first compress the rubber material until the ferrule hits the plastic ring. Soon you will notice that you are not able to turn the wing-nut any further. The plastic ring creates a full stop. It is impossible to further (over-) compress the gasket. Even in a situation where there is pipe misalignment.

In most cases, engineers know where these problem connections are in the system. Simply utilizing the Snap-On gasket in these area´s will resolve big problems. The elastomer we use in the Snap-On gasket is the same as the standard gasket, same contact surface, same validated material.

The Snap-On™ gasket has been designed to be “abused” in terms of compression. ​The Red plastic ring will protect the elastomer gasket material from destruction.

No matter how hard you torque the clamp because of possible alignment issues, the gasket will still function.
